The Virginia Tourism Freelance Writers visit Southwest Virginia’s Crooked Road Music and Around the Mountain Art Trails
Artist, musicians and other sites of interest were visited in early May by a host of writers in an effort to promote Southwest Virginia’s cultural attractions. I was visited by Janis Haske and Jim Weaver. Janice is a travel writer and contributes to American Style Magazine, AAA Westways Magazine and others. Jim contributes to Craft Report, Ceramics Monthly, Art Matters and Travel Magazine. Jim and Janis visited other artist in the Floyd area too. I look forward to seeing their future write-ups on our great county

ABI Workshop
In early winter I attend an Artist Business Institute Workshop in Abingdon VA. I took my Tiger Maple clock and a mirror (see these items in my on-line Gallery). It was information packed day and a quick one-on-one overview of my products and marketing initiatives with an instructor.

Vacation pictures:
My recent trip to California this fall to San Diego and Sonoma.

While in San Diego, I visited Balboa Park [a must see!] and La Jolla to see many old and new tile installations. I attended a tile conference in Pomona at Cal-Poly. The 2-day meeting was filled with demonstrations, slide lectures on historic tiles and current tiles being made and installed today.

Tile Heritage sponsored and shared the proceeds with AMOCA (American Museum of Ceramic Art) with a silent auction. Over 100 mostly modern tiles and a few historic tiles were purchased and dispersed over the US. A few of them even landed in Floyd. AMOCA had a fabulous collection of historic tiles on loan from Mr. Norm Carlson on display.

The most exciting part, as always, is the meeting of old tile friends from all over the states that I've made over the years.

Floyd Fest 2005:
We had a great time at Floyd Fest this past July. We were in one of the tents flanking the main stage.

April '06 - Tile Expo
I “revisited” the Coverings Expo in Orlando in April, the last “manufacturing” tile show I attended was in 1999. It was great seeing a lot of old friends in the ceramic tile industry (which is a shrinking industry). While there, I was able to celebrate with my good friend, Chuck Fitzgerald, who received a Spectrum Award for his tiled dome installation in La Jollia California. This job has lots and lots of handmade tiles (which Chuck made) and a historic Gladdy McBean Lion’s head spitting in a 12 foot fountain! I was able to see the awesome job myself last fall during a visit with Chuck and his wife, Linda.

While in Florida I also delivered a commissioned walnut framed mirror. The tiles were custom made with a Florida motif using gators, turtles, seagulls, crabs and pelicans set in art deco style colors.
